This is a site dedicated to vacationing on a bicycle. You may be a seasoned rider, in which case you may find new ideas for trips. If you are new to cycling, then you may be insprired to step out and take your first tour. We have included some examples of trips that you can plan yourself, but you may decide to go on organized trips depending on your time and budget. My wife and I plan our own.
The name of the site reflects the fact that in the opinion of many, a bike is a better way to vacation. Cycling is faster than walking and more healthy than travelling by car. You get a good view and the feeling of being outdoors. Add to this the thrill of downhill descents and you see why so many cyclists are passionate about their sport.
There are some many wonderful and interesting places to cycle, and hopefully over time this site will describe many more of them. In the meanwhile, we have chosen some rides that my wife and I have personally ridden that we think are outstanding.
You can see the options that you have and plan your trip accordingly. You may want to follow our routes did, or use them as a guide and find new things to see. If you do, please visit our forum and report your experiences.
There are two basic types of bike tours: hub and spoke tours where you return to the same place every evening, and linear tours where you stay at a different place every night. Often you can combine the two types of tours on one trip.
Linear tours are great because you can see a lot of countryside and new vistas. By definition, you never go over the same road twice. You do however have to carry your packs with your clothes and personal effects, or arrange to have someone carry them for you in a "sag wagon". Also, you must arrange for your accommodation along the way. I personally don't find either of these an issue - carrying packs on the bike is not overly difficult, and we have never had difficulty finding accommodation in anything other than high season.
Hub and spoke tours radiate from a single point and gives the advantage of returning to "home" in the evening. It can be a good way to see certain areas where there are a number of interesting sites within a reasonable radius of a home base. You only carry what you may need that day. You will have to decide for yourself which of these types are best.
Happy cycling!
